My graveyard is almost ready, we lost a few store bought tombstones in the wind and I have yet to put them back up. Some of the neighbors stop by and admired the graveyard. Its great to see everyone who drives by smile and look at the graveyard.

I made a Grim Reaper for the graveyard this year. I bought a skeleton mask at a yard sale earlier this year that makes up the head and neck. I have a mannequin that makes up the body, and my friends gave me a nice grim reaper cape. We've had an antique sickle hanging in the barn as long as I've been alive. So I put all these things together and now I have a grim reaper. The mask was stuffed with an oversize black garbage bag and was duck taped to the mannequin. I wired the sickle onto the grim reaper and was trying to set it up when the sickle fell and hit my hand, its a good thing the blade isn't sharp or I would have cut off my finger. I wired it on better and used cinder blocks to keep everything up. The arms are from an old buckley skeleton that fell apart.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/chasealpha1/5121242367/" title="The Reaper by Chase Davis, on type='text'>Cross Tombstone

I have been wanting to create a cross tombstone and had an old one from Party City that was broken last year. I kept it and used it as a template for a larger home made one. I have been having a hard time finding a way to cut the shapes out of my tombstones, I had bought a hot knife for foam from Michael's Craft store, it was really flimsy and broke in just a few minutes. I found some expensive ones that would work online but they are close to 200$; the reason I started making my own was to save money. I know it would be a good investment but not at this point in time. I found a wire cutter in the garage that works off of the air compressor, it did an alright job cutting out the basic shape but didn't go all the way through, I used a wood saw for the rest, can't get too detailed, but as long as I keep the shapes basic it will work ok. The best thing about the wire cutter is that it spins and can buff out some edge details that make the foam look more like stone, it takes the place of sand paper.

The detail work is another plastic type candle holder I found at a yard sale, I unscrewed the part that holds the candle and glued it on to the stone with some liquid nails. I put some moss on the tombstone, living in Missouri there is moss everywhere and I just pulled some up off the ground in the back yard. I plan on putting some more moss on the bottom and sides of this tombstone.

I found some of these changing pictures at Michael's they are new for this year and are about 2" tall, they are "old timey" photos that change the people into skeletons. I pasted this one on the tombstone.

This was an addition to the stone, I hadn't carved anything at first and then decided to just add a year at the bottom.

Pumpkins

This is a Big Max variety pumpkin, I ended up with three of these. I had two huge plants that were growing in some rich compost and they were doing very well until the squash vine borer killed them. Two other plants of this variety survived and then were attacked by the squash bugs. Seven dust took care of those. I have a few plants of the Connecticut Field variety and have about nine pumpkins from those. I don't think The Great Pumpkin will be visiting this little patch on Halloween Night.

This is one of the Connecticut Field pumpkins.

First Homemade Tombstone

I started this tombstone back in June. Cutting out the basic shape was rough going; the hot knife I bought was cheap and broke halfway through. I used some large knifes to cut out the rest of the shape, the blue foam is too thick, I won't be able to use a knife to cut out my second tombstone. I cut out a basic tombstone shape, someone said it looked more like a headboard for a bed.

I'm painting the tombstone flat gray, hopefully I can go back and try to "age" the stone and make it look closer to stone. I've noticed in this area most of the real tombstones have small orange and yellow lichen growing on them. I have some Spanish moss from a bag I got at a garage sale that I might paste on later. The fancy detail I bought at a garage sale, it was a cheap plastic candle holder; it kind of reminds me of the old decorations they used to have at the funeral home.

I painted the words black and they do seem to stand out from the gray tombstone.

In the end this will be seen in the dark with a blue light shining on it, so hopefully any flaws will be covered up by that, you have to admit it is better than those small wal*mart tombstones that cost so much.

More Tombstones

More tombstones photos from the cemetery in Seymour. We started out at Lowes, and let me tell you, they do not act like the guys on their TV commercials. Well the guy at the paint desk was very helpful and polite, he did a great job; however the guys in the lumber area where the foam is basically told be to do it yourself. I used to work at a grocery store and our boss would tell us it didn't matter if a guy built like Arnold Schwarzenegger came in we asked the guy if he wanted us to carry his grocerys out. I asked the guys at the project counter for some help; I was carrying paint and glue; its not like I can't get some huge foam board myself, I'm capable, its just the fact the guy was a major a-hole. This was the Lowe's in Springfield, Missouri.

I then went to Michale's craft store where I bought a hot knife for foam cutting. Its normally a 20$ item; I had a 50% off coupon so it was 10$. 10$ I want back, while cutting the foam about 2/3 the way down the damn thing broke, it wasn't doing a good job cutting the foam and it was very flimsy. I am thinking of buying a hot knife from the Hotwire Foam Factory online, but they are more expensive, I was hoping do it yourself was cheaper than those wal mart tombstones. I know it will look better in the end to do it myself but I can't spend a fortune on this stuff.

The Hearse Song

I want to put this on one of the foam tombstones I will be building soon. With only somewhere around 160 days left until Halloween there are a lot of things to be done. We've decided this year's theme will be "All Things Halloween"; with that being said, I still don't like anything 'cute'. Its Halloween damn it, its suppose to be scary.

We plan on building some of those foam tombstones like you see over at the Davis Grave Yard (No relation). That is if we can find the right foam; and a cutting device.

Its almost time to plant pumpkin seeds, we learned a lot from last year. Im going to have to find some squash bug spray, Seven dust doesn't work. I had a lot of college classes in agriculture and have been growing things my whole life; well I mean helping mom grow things; and I couldn't produce any pumpkins for last Halloween. Hopefully this year we will have a bumper crop.

We want to work on the outside more this year than focus on the indoors. We want some skeleton guys playing cards on the front porch and maybe some walking zombies in the grave yard. If we get time and money we will turn the storage shed into a mausoleum.

Happy Halloween

Here is a picture from the Seymour Missouri Trunk or Treat Halloween 2009

We heard a really strange noise coming from the woods right after dark, it sounded like a police siren at first then changed into the sound of a girl screaming, a barred owl responded to this loud sound that came from the dark woods behind my barn; it was really creepy, there wasn't anyone around that we could tell.

Halloween Party 2009

We had our Halloween Party for 2009, it was a great success. This year's theme was mad scientist, I dressed as a Mad Scientist and my Wife dressed as a dead nurse that was sewn together from "spare" body parts. My sister made both of our costumes.

We used scence setters from Party City for the kitchen. The skull is from a bag of bones we bought a couple years back, Wal Mart had them in 2007 for 14$, you can only get them at Spirit or Party City this year and they are around 24$. It includes a skull and several other bones. The test tubes were candy test tubes, new for wal mart this year. The old timey radio was my grandma's, it doesn't work, it used to have an orange light in it, I wish it would have worked to add some more color. The severed head is from Party City for 24$, the jars were various types of jars I cleaned up and pasted some labels onto, I got some labels off the internet and printed them, and pasted them with a gluestick. I put some plastic fingers in one jar, some candy eyeballs in another, some food coloring and water in a couple, the green jar is a yagermeister bottle. The glowing blue was a jar with tonic water that glows blue in black light. The bright green was some of the atomic glow stuff that I got from Steve Spangler Science, it worked really well and the little black lights that came with it were a lifesaver for the whole setup. I have three other blacklights on this display, however, the atomic glow and tonic water really glowed better with the small blacklights that came with the atomic glow concentrate.

I researched several real life mad scientist, like the Russian who tried to graft extra heads onto dogs, and re-animate tissue using a device known as the autojecktor that pumps oxygenated blood into a drained corpse to "re-animate" the body.

Here is a guy in the graveyard, I wish our graveyard was a lot larger than it is.

I tried the fog machine chiller that I built earlier, the wind was not cooperating and blew the fog out of the casket and away from the graveyard, I wanted fog that rolled over the ground. I put some rope lights inside the casket, I also put one of those shop lights out in front of the graveyard to light it up.

These foam gravestones are really hard to keep standing up, they are cheaply made but not necessarily cheap. I think this one was around 24$, I bought it on sale last year in November, it is so hard to get these things to stay up, the wind knocks them down even when you use somekind of metal stake in to the ground and in them.

Getting Ready for Halloween 09

We put up the scene setters in the living room, each year is like we get amnesia, we have a few more to put up in the kitchen. I got the head from Party City for 24$

The candy flasks were from Wal Mart and were 3$ each, the big flask with the quark was 6$ and comes with a little brain that will expand in water, it came from Party City. I will use the big glass jar for the punch this year, it will look like a concoction made by a mad scientist; it was around 6$ from the Wal Mart kitchen section. The three test tubes were from a large package of test tube candy that was in the Wal Mart Halloween Candy. The green poison bottle is a yagermeister bottle, I found some labels online but can't find the bookmark for the site. In the movies they show fog in cemeterys and creepy places that just rolls over the ground. If you have a fog machine with a built in chiller you can get the same effect, well, I don't have the money to buy one of those, they cost around $70 to $100, so I got some plans on the internet and modified them to build my own chiller. This is what I did, if you decide to do this and you burn your house down, melt your fog machine, ruin it or kill yourself its not my fault; this is just what I did.

I went to the hardware store and got some hose clamps, I forgot what they were called and the guy looked at me funny when I tried to explain what they were; When he asked what I was doing I didn't really tell him, I live in a small town and he would have just looked at me like I was crazy. So I found these hose clamps and then found some wire mesh just laying around, along with a pvc pipe, also just laying around. I cut some of the pvc pipe, it just happened that one end of the pipe was bigger, it was one that was made to fit another pipe into, I think it used to be some kind of soccer goal? That lager end of the pipe just happned to fit perfectly over the nozzle of my fog machine. I found an old cooler and cut a hole in in to fit a piece of pipe in, then I cut the mesh and clamped one hose clamp around the wire and pipe inside the cooler, then the same on the other end.

The idea is that the fog will go through the pipe and will be cooled buy ice when the cooler if filled up all the way, then hopefully enough of the fog will go out the other side and roll through my cemetery.

I just hope the nozzle doesn't melt the pvc pipe, I also am worried the machine might get too hot.

Halloween 1992

In 1992 I was eight years old and dressed up like Batman. They had several neat colored bottles with Halloween labels. I bought some of the bottles and a statue bust of a skeleton man. I then headed to Party City and saw that their Halloween stuff is barley out. There are a few items at Party City, I plan on buying a scene setter to match this year's theme of Mad Scientist.

I bought this at Michael's for about 14$

These flickering light bulbs I bought at Party City for about 4.99$ for two of them; they look like a flickering candle flame.

I bought these bottles at Michael's, the big ones were 4.99$ and the small ones were 2.99$

Also for the Mad Scientist theme I found something called Atomic Glow from the Steve Spangler Science website, I plan on buying some of this liquid which will turn water into a green glowing liquid that looks like its radio active. I found a cylinder shaped aquarium which I will put the "atomic water" in; I found a website where you can make your own warning labels, I made a warning label with the radioactive symbol on it; you can find that website here: http://www.warninglabelgenerator.com/

Also to go with the Mad Scientist lab I have information about some real live mad scientist including Sergey Bryukhonenko, a Russian scientist who in the 1940s conducted experiments on dogs, and invented a device call the autojecktor, which he used to keep severed dog heads alive by injecting the brain with oxygenated blood into the dog's brain; I first heard about this in a true book called Stiff. I will print out photos and information about the mad scientist on "aged paper" and put it near a very old typewriter we have, along with a very old radio and an old rotary phone.

Pumpkins and Halloween Planning

Its already August! Halloween is only 89 days away, and we are having our party a week early this year! I planted several pumpkin plants back in June, then the squash bugs killed all those plants, one pumpkin came up later and it is still alive; I planted some more seeds and they have yet to come up. I am afraid I will be buying pumpkins again this year, I try to buy local, Simpson Farms in Mountain Grove, Missouri is one of the local growers I have bought at in the past, however it isn't the cheapest place to buy pumpkins, there was a stand last year south of the intersection of James River Freeway on Campbell Street in Springfield that sold pumpkins for a very good deal, at least they were grown in the USA.

</a

Introducing Haunted Hot Sauce

My wife found this neat new website called Haunted Hot Sauce; it features several hot sauces with Halloween themed names. All their sauces come in a small coffin with fake maggots. It also has some cool do-it-yourself ideas for Halloween party decorations and also photos. I think I'll be ordering some of the hot sauce when It gets closer to Halloween, maybe August, I want to use it for this year's party.

This year's party by the way will be a Mad Scientist theme. We have gotten a lot of ideas from Halloween books from the library. Halloween propmaker's handbook by Ken Pitek has a lot of good ideas and projects, a few are complicated but can be done by almost anyone with simple tools, its just how much effort you want to put into it. I will probably be getting this book again just before Halloween to help with some of the projects.

Coffin Couches and the Search for a new Casket

I am searching for a new casket or coffin; the old one needs a lot of work, it has rusted by the tree in the back yard for 30 years or more and the first time it moved was the Halloween of 2007, before that it was storing old bottles my dad thought were antiques, it wasn't a good place for the bottles, mice were living in them and dirt was everywhere. I cleaned them out and moved the casket, now I keep it on concrete blocks to keep it from rusting more and have started applying a coat of spray paint. I didn't realize how much spray paint I was going to need, I've already used two cans and that has only coated the lid one time.

Me spray painting the casket.

While searching for a casket online I came across a neat site that sells used caskets that have been converted into couches. WWW.COFFINCOUCHES.COM sells some really awesome couches made of real caskets that were used to display bodies before cremation. These guys got the caskets for free because the funeral homes couldn't sell them legally because they were used and weren't going to use them again. I contacted a large funeral home in Springfield and they said when they display a body for viewing that is going to be cremated they just re-use the casket and put in a new liner. I guess that is good for the funeral home but not for the Halloween prop maker.

How To Create a Bathroom Murder Scene

Here is a picture of 2008's bathroom murder scene:

You will need a bottle of fake blood; some fake body parts and a bathroom, duh. I sprayed the fake blood all over the bathtub and shower. Be careful this stuff might stain, especially if you get it anywhere but on the tile. I bought a 2$ "party" light bulb from Wal Mart in the light bulb isle. I bought a red bulb for the bathroom and a green one for the kitchen. A couple of paper towels make a great extra when you wipe the "blood" off your hands and throw it halfway into the trash can; it makes it look like the murderer wiped his hands off. Last year I had a hand saw with some fake blood on it near the tub.

Zombies Attack!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_labmZIjKcTo/SYxaiY_pcOI/AAAAAAAAABY/REtQopKGN_M/s320/2638246638_7caa3cdbfa.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299710408379691234" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_labmZIjKcTo/SYxXADaAFTI/AAAAAAAAABQ/DXGs2ofArTw/s320/3238462542_e0180d39b8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299706519934211378" />

The dead have risen and are eating the flesh of the living! My wife made this recipe and we used crab meat, I think that a better substitute would be the imitation crap meat that is actually fish, that way anyone who might be allergic to shellfish wont die at your party If anyone does die at your party make sure to tell them to haunt it next year so you have a real ghost, my friend Kasey ate some of the brain pate and then said, "hey I'm allergic to this stuff but it is so good." He ate some more! We used a food processor to blend everything up; the hardest thing to find was the clear gelatin, its in the same aisle as the Jello, apparently people use it for baking and stuff. The skull used in the photo was once again a purchase from the Great Wall of China Mart (Wal*Mart) for 12$ from 2008.

Bizarre Brain Pate

1 (10 3/4-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
8 ounces Philadelphia cream cheese, softened
1 (.25-ounce) envelope unflavored gelatin, softened in 1/4 cup water
1 bunch green onions, chopped
3 pounds cooked shrimp, coarsely chopped
(or 1 pound crab meat)
1 cup mayonnaise
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
Tabasco or creole seasoning to taste

Heat soup, undiluted, and mix in the cream cheese. This site offers several unique pumpkin carving stencils to download. An all access pass to download 186 different patterns and some bonus ones costs a one time payment of 20$, it last until January 1, 2010, when ever you buy a membership it only lasts until the 1st of January the coming year. To take the best advantage of this you should buy early in the year to get all the patterns you can until Halloween. Of course you can print them all, save those and make copies to actually carve from. In this global recession a lot of folks probably won't be spending 20 bucks to buy jack-o-lantern patterns. I hope that when things get better around here I can afford to buy the membership from Zombie Pumpkins before the 4th of July because they have a bunch of great patriotic patterns to carve into watermelons.

The site features well known monsters and characters and even has sponge bob square pants for the kids.

http://www.zombiepumpkins.com/

Pictures from Halloween 2007

Here are a couple photos from 2007 and then one from 2008 of Tommy in his pumpkin helmet. 2008

<img The living room and kitchen were transformed into a haunted house. We used scene setters from last year and bought some new ones too. Many trips to party city and wal mart were made. Our theme was classic monsters; we were both vampires, we forgot to get pics of us though!

We bought a fog machine from wal mart, a cheap 20$ one; when they said not to use it in the house they meant it! I tried the thing out in the house and the whole house was filled with a nasty smelling fog! We built the grave yard again and there were some improvements this year; including another skeleton and a graveyard sign. We stuffed the fog machine into the coffin and the fog rolled over the road and made for a great scene. Those foam gravestones sure are expensive and hard to keep in the ground. The directions on them are a joke, they show the little pieces of plastic holding them up, that's a load of B.S.

We baked a devil's food cake, cut it and put it on a cookie sheet and added one of those ginger bread Halloween houses from wal*mart. We used the candy molds that were shaped like gravestones to make mint shaped stones for the front yard of the cake. The mints were basically mint extract mixed with powder sugar, cream cheese and regular sugar; got the recipe out of a cookbook. We made a brain dip from a website I found, we had a brain mold from last year; they didn't have any from wal mart this year, however Spirit Halloween did have brain molds for future reference.

The bathroom was a murder scene again, we bought some more body parts from the Spirit Halloween store; the fake blood still hasn't all come off of the tub.

Welcome

Announcing my new non-partisan Halloween Blog!
